THE CHOIRS

Church Choir.     Sung Eucharists on Sundays and other Holy Days are led by this Choir consisting primarily of adult men and women. Anthems include music of substance from plain chant through Renaissance and Elizabethan motets to English anthems of the 16th to 21st centuries, German chorales, French masterworks, and contemporary American compositions.

Festival Choir.     This is a community choir including members from several churches besides St. Luke's that sings Evensong, including major choral works, monthly. The Choir is dedicated to maintaining the ancient tradition of Anglican cathedral and collegiate music, majestic music in a majestic space. Evensongs conclude with organ concerts, chamber music recitals, choral concerts by visiting choirs, or extended choral works, such as Requiem Masses or Cantatas, often with orchestral accompaniment.

Handbell Choir.     This Choir is for people who think they can’t sing or may not have a background in music.  It includes people of all ages and skills.  The Choir plays several times throughout the year at the Sunday Sung Eucharist on festive occasions.

Boys and Girls.       St. Luke’s has a long tradition of involving boys and girls in the choral ministry of the church. The Choir of Men and Boys was the backbone of the choral ministry for almost 100 years, and a Choir of Women and Girls led a family service for several decades after 1950.  In recent years we have at various times welcomed children into the Church Choir with music education classes held prior to the regular practice, rehearsed a separate Children’s Choir on Sundays, and supported a stipendiary Boy Choir program with after-school rehearsals. Children derive lasting benefit from choir training.
